Tiease's Focus on Shibuya, Japan!

In Tokyo, there are some really uncultivated new fashions debuted on the sidewalks daily. There is a drizzling assortment of styles, cultures, subcultures so it gets really overwhelming sometimes but never dull!  Fashionistas & fashion freaks are a dime a dozen however sometimes there are  new fashion statements that even catch my eye.

You have probably noticed and pondered about the area of Tokyo's frequently photographed & often featured shopping district seen around the world with its distinctive symmetrical "Y" shaped intersecting street. You probably noticed the energetic confusion, neon light, tall building, Outlandish fashions, unbelievable fads, huge flat screen televisions etc... all icons of the district known as Shibuya. Shibuya is an exciting & chaotic fashion shopping area of Tokyo that is guaranteed to capture your attention & imagination.

Like in the USA, Paris, Italy (Milan) etc.. each season brings new style changes and fresh trends & subcultures come and go, in addition to various designer brands which can be hot today and dead cold tomorrow!

Shibuya is the shopping district which surrounds Shibuya Station, one of Tokyo's busiest railway stations. This area is a well known leading fashion area with an exhilarating array of stores, specialty shops, restaurants, traditional dance studio, little secret places to set your spirit free. The Shibuya fashion district is vogue hit especially with young women, and the area flaunts a boss night-life. Tokyu (which sounds like 10–9 in Japanese).

The contemporary fashion scene in Shibuya extends northward from Shibuya Station to Harajuku, where youth culture reigns; Omotesandō, the zelkova tree- and fashion brand-lined street; and Sendagaya, Tokyo's apparel design district. It will take much more than this one article to fully appreciate what the area has to offer but it is worth looking into.

Shibuya has achieved great popularity among young and mature people in the last 30 years. There are many famous fashion department stores in Shibuya. Shibuya 109 is a major shopping center near Shibuya Station, particularly famous as the origin of the kogal subculture. Called "Ichi-Maru-kyū," which translates as 1–0–9 in Japanese, the name is actually a pun on that of the corporation that owns it.  Shibuya includes many well-known commercial and residential districts such as Daikanyama, Ebisu, Harajuku, Hiroo, Higashi, Omotesandō, Sendagaya, and Yoyogi.

It just goes to show that fashion flows into every culture freely and never stops asking, "What if."

Making sense of the new sunscreen labels.

With summer upon us its not to soon that we start actively protecting our skin from sun damage and understanding the new FDA sunscreen label requirements. A basic down-to-earth start would be to decipher the label requirements &  definitions of sunscreens; Followed up by some boating safety tips to keep you safe and alive during this summer season.

It looks like everytime we turn around there is some new warning or finding for our FDA & various other agencies. Of course it is intended to soothe (So we are told) but it can rattle the senses. Fortunately when it comes to product labels I do find them helpful and informative provided the company list everything on their labels according to the law and as far as I'm concerned they can list even more. I want to know what is within the food I eat and feed my family and What goes into my cosmetics and sunscreens are high priority.

So here's your Sun screen definitions heads up:

Broad Spectrum:

Sunscreens with an SPF with at minimum 15 have passed the broad-spectrum test are permitted to claim their product will reduce your risk of skin cancer & premature wrinkling (A definite no-no for the Fashionista). Any rating below 15 doesn't legally have the right to list on their label & promote their product as being, "Broad Spectrum" the manufacturers are allowed to say their product helps prevent sun damage only!

The well known term "Sunblock" is infamous in itself but what does it really mean? It appears to suggest you can completely block the sun's skin damaging rays, when this is just not so. New regulations have made it legal to use only the term sunscreen rather than sunblock on their labels, and about time too I am sick of the lies.

Remember a minimum of SPF 15, reapply every 1-2 hours and follow the sunscreen application  directions. If you are curious as to how long your sunscreen will last when no water activity is involved or intense sweating, take the number of SPF and multiply it by 10. That is the length of time you'd be safe from the sun's rays. For example: SPF 15 x 10 = 150 minutes of protection.

Url:  Http://youtu.be/gi9GYymOjzw learning the dangers of UV

Water Resistant claims by sunscreens must specifically clarify how long their product can stand up to your water-fun frolicing & perspiration before it looses it effectiveness. Which means if it offers 6 hours of protection it must notify potential customers of their specific endurance. The waterproof & perspiration prood claims are no longer tolerated on the label.

The term "Broad Spectrum" has come under exacting governmental requirements. When you read on a product's label that it is broad-spectrum it must have undergone test to make sure it provides the sun protection that it claims to possess. Which means it must provide protection from skin-burning, Harmful sun rays referred to as UVB rays, skin aging & potential cancer causing UVA rays too.

Most sunscreens protect against UVB rays, but manufacturers are having to step up their game with the new label laws, so many started including UVA protection, but not manufacturers include the dual protection. To be on the safe side read your sunscreen label carefully and make sure it specificies both UVA/UVB or "broad spectrum coverage" on the product.

You should practice self-health advocacy by knowing the difference between UVA and UVB potentially damaging rays.

Without being overly technical both Uva & Uvb sun rays are simply wave lengths, which means their specific energy levels radiating from our sun. Knowing the difference between UVA and UVB rays will enable you sun-worshipers to purchase the appropriate sunscreen for you skin & learn about the potential dangers from each type of ray.

UVB Rays are responsible for those dangerous sunburns. UVB rays are responsible for causing most skin cancers & UVB rays are most prevalent during noon when the sun is at it's highest, so take advasive measures when venturing outdoors mid day.

Large doses of UVA rays can also contribute to potential skin cancer. It's helpful to know that UVA  rays strength varies through out the year and are more common during the summer, but can reflect off of objects such as, snow & water to damage skin in colder weather. With this said it's essential you protect your precious skin year-round.
Summer is approaching the Northern Hemisphere and it's time to apply sunscreens. For Fashionista without natural brown/bronze skin self-tanners are often part of their beauty regimen. Here's a tip from me to all you Divas seeking a beautiful tan. If you are fotunate who haven't learned the hard way that applying a skin tanner then spritzing yourself with your favorite scent (regardless to how inexpensive/expensive it may be) deodorant or any chemical can irritate your skin, resulting in a carrot to greenish complexion.

In truth depending on your skin sensitivity undesired discoloration, burns, and various other negative effects may result; So to be on the safe side after applying  your favorite skin tanning lotion/ointment please for goodness sake avoid applying any other chemicals to your skin for at least 6-8 hours dependidng on your skin sensitivity.
Well I've said my piece on this subject now lets talk boating safety, since sailing is another fun summer time activity you want to survive your summer fun. So keep these quick Boating safety tips in mind:

Don't operate your boat while intoxicating-Under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol.

Always have a back up plan should emergency arise, and let people know that you will be sailing that day.
Common sense dictates that you check your local weather forecast to avoid running into storms, unusually high waves etc.

Avoid fuel spills when refueling your boat.

Keep on-board sanitation equipment well-maintained.

Don't litter. Keep your trash bags on board & dipose of it appropriately.

I believe in always having life vest available.

If you've never been sailing before you may want to take along some sea-sick pills, which can be purchased over-the-counter at any drug store and many supermarkets.

Always make sure your boat & its radio are in good working order.

Now get out their Fashionistas and show them what you've got! :)

Wellness & Beauty for Fashionistas by Tiease

A Factual Discussion on High Cholesterol & Heart Disease & their effects on Fashionistas' health by Tiease D. Deutsch R. N.

Quirky dysfunctional family DNA can cause a heart attack/cardio infarction! I just want to make sure that my Fashionista Followers are aware that elevated cholesterol can be the cause of heart attack and strokes.

Unfortunately modern Fashionistas & their Physicians are often oblivious of elevated cholesterol levels & potential heart attack symptoms concerning women & can present dramatically different signs/symptoms from those of male counter parts. Women have more insidious signs/symptoms associated with  heart attacks than males and & all to often the warning signs are mistakenly diagnosed as nonthreatening gastric disturbances & dismissed altogether.

Fashionistas need to be more pro-self-health advocates & lobby on behalf of their own health and survival by  recommending blood test, cardiograms & appropriate heart testing to uncovered major blood vessel obstructions/blockages.

Amazingly you can be on a strict regimented low fat diet but still be frustrated and plagued by elevated cholesterol because cholesterol has a lot to do with your family DNA history.

Heart specimen that has suffered a myocardial infarction. A myocardial infarction or MI is necrosis of the myocardium as a result of interruption of the blood supply to the area, that is a heart attack.

You can hire a high class dietitian to prepare healthy meals but when it fails to correct your elevated cholesterol. For women caught up in this mess you may need cholesterol medication to block the absorption of cholesterol that comes from you dietary consumption and alter the natural cholesterol that your  body makes naturally.

There are several medications available on the market to help you over come your elevated cholesterol levels & achieve your goal such as;
Lipitor & Vytorin to name just two.

Such medications work by prevent the absorption of cholesterol in the food you eat & works double duty by reducing the natural cholesterol your body produces. Don't be afraid to aggressively ask questions and talk to your physician about which drug may benefit you.

Common sense dictates that you takes precautions when considering anti-cholesterol medications & any drug for that matter if you are nursing/lactating, have liver disease, are pregnant and those individuals with compromised immune system such as, HIV/Aids.

Sometimes unexpected muscle pain & weakness can occur and should be reported to your cardiologist (Heart specialists doctor) stat, also if you are taking other medications or consuming certain types of nutrients, increasing your risk of getting this serious side effect. This is why your health care provider must be made aware of all the prescription,over-the-counter drugs and supplements you are taking, since combining certain medications can result in negative side effects and even fatalities.

If you are over weight, have diabetes, or other chronic illnesses this may complicate your situation, so take charge by cross examining your physician/cardiologist in reference to your potential hereditary tendencies.

Always remember but don't get excited to follow a healthy diet & ask your cardiologist about diagnostic test and medications which can help you manage your cholesterol and prevent heart attack and/or stoke.

Regrettably in regards to women retrospect exams often reveal undiagnosed angina and heart disease. The old myth that heart attack is generally a male health problem dies hard & women are dying because of this sexism in medicine. It's time that male doctors get their out of the sand and treat their female clients with just as much concern, respect, and swift actions, since this would decrease the number of women who die from heart attack & who have never had their cholesterol levels assessed either.

Traditionally heart attack signs & symptoms appear in both sexes as:

Heart specimen that has suffered a myocardial infarction. A myocardial infarction or MI is necrosis of the Myocardial muscle (Your Heart) as a result of interruption of the blood supply to the area, that is a heart attack.

Pressure, fullness or a squeezing pain in the center of the chest, which may spread to the neck, shoulder or jaw;

Chest discomfort with lightheartedness, fainting, sweating, nausea or shortness of breath;

Often women don't have chest pain. In the Circulation study on early female heart attack symptoms, researchers found that during a heart attack, 43% of the women studied had no "acute/sudden chest pain-The primary symptom in men.

Studies have proven that many ER physicians continue to focus exclusively on chest pain. Resulting in a shocking minority who bother to investigate other types of symptoms which women tend to develop. This is why more women are likely to die from a heart attack rather than males who are tested more aggressively.

Some  women do have chest tightness & the feeling of heavy pressure on their chest as warning signals of cardio-infarction/ heart attack. It's essential that  you become your own Self-Health Advocate in order to protect your own life! And to recognize early warning signs like elevated cholesterol & heart attack symptom listed belows. Keep in mind that every woman is an individual so that symptoms will vary in different women.

Common female heart attack symptoms:

Shortness of breath (57.9%)

Women often mistake signs/symptoms of Heart Attack  as a mere stomach ailment, stress induced anxiety or hormonal cramps.

Weakness (54.8%)

Tiredness/fatigue (42.9%)

Nausea

Dizziness

Lower chest discomfort

Upper stomach region  pressure and/or discomfort which is often mistaken for: Indigestion, Gerd, heart burn. You know your body & when something just doesn't feel right then stand up for yourself and demand your health-care provider take action!
