Eyeglasses for the young Fashionista!

Teens are puberty crazed bundles of bewildered energy and surging hormones. Girls are into fashion at ever increasing younger ages today. Given the raging hormones and peer-pressure to fit in and look appealing, there is little mystery in the fact that by announcing to a young aspiring Fashionista that she/he has visions problems which may require her to wear glasses is not going to sit well with your little Diva!
And as the responsible adult Fashionista you will have to step up; educate yourself about the specific vision problem your little Diva has
been diagnosed with and find a way to get the glasses and/or treatments required to preserve her both vision & her stylish persona while assuring she continues to be a major force in the fashion arena.

Obviously if your Ophthalmologist says your child needs glasses to improve her vision, and correct: amblyopia (lazy eye) or optical muscle bugaboos you must act to maintain her/his precious eye sight. There are a whole host of eye disorder which may require glasses, such as: Myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness) and
astigmatism (irregularity in curvature of the front portion of the eye).
Unfortunately some children are born with vision disturbances a baby's eyes can be tested for glasses before they are old enough to complain about or demonstrate vision disturbances. Your eye doctor (ophthalmologist) will exam her eyes by first dilating her pupil with eye drops; After the pupil has dilated your eye doctor will look at the retina with retinoscope. This instrument utilizes varying powers of lenses in front of her eye. The proper strength of glass lenses will focus the beam of light from the retinoscope directly on the retina.
Post examination your eye doctor will write a prescription specifying the necessary lens power required to help resolve your child's problem. The higher the first number on your prescription, the greater the correction in the lens. A plus (+) sign in front of the first number indicates a hyperopic or farsighted prescription. A minus (-) indicates a myopic or nearsighted prescription.

Now comes the challenge and tricky step; actually selecting a pair of chic frames which embodies your young Fashionista's individuality & doesn't make her/him look like a dork! You want the frames to charm, sizzle and seduce the
eye!

The frame you and your young Fashionista choose should be comfortable, safe, sturdy and of course fashionable. There are some opticians who specialize in working with youths; if you are lucky enough to have one of these ask her/him to recommend the most
suitable frame styles, such as suitable frames for her facial features, age, presumption strength, lifestyle & find out which frames young people are flocking to.

Teens don't have to most astute attention span and often break or lose their glasses so find out if your frames come with guarantees. Select high quality and hard wearing frames. When you have tried on and modeled the most savvy frames keep in mind that very young Fashionistas have somewhat flat bridges in their nose, consequently they tend to slide down, so special attention must be paid to proper fitting of the nose bridge of your frame.

Nose pad can also help, silicone pads with non-skid surface are best. Occasionally loose pads & arms need to be drilled into the nose bridge to obtain the proper fit. Just do what you have to do.

The right straps can make the scene and allows for creativity. Allow your teen to decorate her strap as she/he desires and she can substitute attractive bling, diamond studded straps and other thrilling ornamentation. Allow her to become a style leader & create a chic statement all her own! Your strap may need to be adjusted periodically. If your little Fashionista is not into straps she/he may prefer cable temples which secure glasses by curling around the ears rather than pressing on the sides of the head. They eliminate the need for a strap. These cable temples are recommended for teens
who are athletic and very active, such as cheer leaders or competitive swimmers!
Sports goggles should meet the Z87 American National Standards Institute (ANSI) safety standards. Prescription lenses are available for swimming goggles, ski goggles and scuba diving masks. Your optician can help you here.

Your ophthalmologist (eye doctor) will explain to you and your teen how much time she/he should wear her glasses & whether or not certain activities which could be performed without them, such as reading and what the consequences might be if they are not worn, like eventual blindness!
Keep in mind that the right pair of attractive, proper fitting glasses can transform a geek into a chic fox! A positive self-esteem is essential to looking and feeling good.
